For Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828),** Swedish botanist and physician who travelled as surgeon with ships of the Dutch East India Company and did extensive botanical exploration in southern Africa and Japan. He was a student of Linnaeus, one of his so-called apostles and perhaps his foremost disciple, a plant collector and explorer, and after his travelling years was a professor of botany and medicine at Uppsala.
